"Decomposing Wage Inequality Change into Trade and Technology Components Using General Equilibrium Models"

چکیده

Economists have long been interested in decomposing observed economic outcomes drive by multiple factors into parts attributable to each. This is the case in both the growth accounting literature (Solow, 1957), and the economic history literature (Fogel, (1964), for instance). The majority of these exercises focus on identifying the separate role played by a few key factors presumed to be the main sources behind the outcome, typically leaving a residual as attributed to factors not explicitly modelled. How to decompose observed economic outcomes has been little studied in the applied general equilibrium literature (see Shoven and Whalley, 1992). Models have, instead, largely been used for ex-ante counterfactual exercises of anticipated policy changes, whose outcome has not been observed.

Impacts of Import Tariff Cuts on the Iranian Labor Market Structure: a Computable General Equilibrium Model Approach

Most debates about the role of tariff cuts on the level of employment and rate of wages in labor market have come out of well-known Hecscher – Ohlin and Stopler – Samuelson (HOS) theorems. Considering the fact that we have divided the workforce into skilled and unskilled labors the present paper assesses the impacts of tariff cuts on labor market indicators in Iran. To address these issues...

Trade, Technology, and China’s Wage Inequality

China experienced a sharp increase in wage inequality between unskilled and skilled workers in the late 1990s. Using a sample of 1,500 firms in five Chinese cities with available data for 1998 and 2000, we investigate the role of technology and foreign trade in determining China’s wage inequality. We find evidence that conditional on the technology deployed, trade reduces wage inequality in exp...

Wage inequality, technology, and trade

Recent widening of the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers has been attributed mainly to skill-biased-technical-change and to trade liberalization. This paper examines the effects of the two in a unified model, in which trade and technology adoption are endogenous. The paper has two main results. First, technical progress increases the wage gap in developed and in less developed coun...

Trade and Rising Wage Inequality in the UK: Results from a CGE Analysis

The phenomenon of rising wage inequality has been extensively documented in OECD countries. In the final quarter of the last century it appears to have been particularly marked in the US and UK. The drivers of rising inequality have been subject to econometric analysis and the relative roles of trade and skill-biased technical change evaluated. In this paper, we take an alternative approach, na...
